The Gustav Holst Ensemble will be performing at St Michael & All Angels Church, Bath Road, W4.

Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, composed in the final months of his life in 1828, is widely regarded as one of the greatest chamber works ever written. Scored unusually for two cellos rather than the traditional two violas, the quintet achieves an extraordinary richness and depth of sonority.

The opening movement unfolds with expansive lyricism and bold contrasts, showcasing Schubert’s gift for melody and emotional breadth. The Adagio—often described as one of the most profound slow movements in the chamber repertoire—moves between serene stillness and aching intensity. A rustic, high-spirited scherzo follows, full of rhythmic vitality, before the work concludes with a glowing, life-affirming finale.

A masterpiece of scale, imagination and expressive power, the quintet stands as a transcendent culmination of Schubert’s chamber music.
